Upcoming Shadow Program for Students!

RealWorld DesignWeek
The ASID Student Career Project

RealWorld DesignWeek is a comprehensive program focused on career development, offering both classroom and hands-on learning experiences to introduce students to the real world of interior design. The program is designed to educate future leaders of the industry and provide them with experiences that will help them embrace the professional practices, ethics and skill sets necessary to secure a prestigious and respected position in interior design.

RealWorld DesignWeek exists exclusively for ASID student members with the active participation of ASID professional members, allied members and Industry Partner members.

During RealWorld DesignWeek, ASID student members will participate in one-day shadow experiences with ASID designer members and Industry Partners.

RealWorld DesignWeek will be book-ended by a pair of online instructional seminars - Prepare and Position - hosted by guest speakers.

On the front end, Prepare educates students on various aspects of professionalism such as:

  • Composition of a professional introductory business letter
  • Construction of a cover letter and resume
  • Proper business etiquette and attire
  • Correct use of digital communication

On the back end, Position reinforces the importance of follow-up by addressing

  • Continued business etiquette such as hand-written thank you notes
  • How to maintain contacts
  • How to expand experience into a possible internship or job placement
  • How to use experience as a stepping stone to future career

RealWorld DesignWeek will be launched simultaneously nationwide in every ASID chapter October 19 - 25, 2008.

Stay alert for more information as it comes available.

AWARD WINNERS FOR THE 2007 STUDENT CAREER DAY!

The Meredith Lacey Award was established in honor of Meredith Lacey who was an active ASID Industry Partner representing Lacey Champion Carpets. Tragically, both she and her husband were killed in an airplane accident in Orlando. Each year this award is presented in her memory to one outstanding student that demonstrates excellence in interior design.

Each school that maintains an ASID student chapter is eligible to submit candidates. Those who were nominated by their schools are:

Katrina Kostik, Florida State University
Marion McCourt, Seminole Community College
Viviana Stuart, University of Florida

These students appeared before a distinguished panel of judges including:

  • Joseph Hittinger, ASID IIDA, Assoc A1A, President of California Peninsula ASID Chapter, and design expert on an HGTV television show
  • Clay Seacrest, ASID, with his own design business in Tallahassee
  • Antoinette Prisco, ASID, current President Elect and upcoming President of the Florida North Chapter of ASID, with her own design business in Cocoa Beach

The winner of this competition for the Meredith Lacey Award was Katrina Kostik. She was awarded a scholarship of $750.

STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS

The Florida North Chapter of ASID has chosen to give one scholarship to each of the schools who maintain an ASID student chapter with an Interior Design program within the Florida North chapter’s geographical area. At this time, there are five schools that qualify. One scholarship in the amount of $500 was given to a junior or senior in the interior design program at each of the qualifying schools who participated. The interior design faculty at these schools selected the following students to represent their school based on need and ability in the study of interior design. The recipient had to be a student member of ASID to be eligible. Each of the following students received a $500 scholarship.

  • Katrina Kostik from Florida State University
